Oni Mask Tee

An oni mask tee that keeps the demon on the outside

A horned demon head in deep blues and reds, teeth bared, filling the centre of the panel under a column of Japanese type and FEARLESS GUARDIAN marked across the top. The oni mask tee takes the most recognisable monster in Japanese folklore and treats it, correctly, as protection rather than threat.

That reading is not a modern softening. Oni appear on temple roof tiles, on festival masks and above doorways precisely because a demon facing outward keeps other demons away. The same logic runs through hannya masks in noh theatre and through the demon imagery tattooed across backs for centuries: you wear the frightening thing so that it works for you. Setsubun, the bean-throwing festival every February, is built entirely on the idea — oni wa soto, demons out.

The drawing leans into that. The face is drawn hot and detailed, with gold in the eyes and the horns pushing past the frame, but the composition around it is cold and controlled: a bordered panel, a vertical type column, small technical lettering closing it out. That contrast between a wild subject and a rigid layout is what keeps it from reading as costume graphic.

It comes in black, americano and slate — three dark bases, chosen deliberately. A print this saturated needs a ground that lets the blues and reds sit forward. Black gives the most contrast and the most drama. Americano warms the reds toward something older. Slate is the quietest, and the easiest to wear under an open jacket where only part of the panel shows.

The blank is 240 gsm heavyweight cotton, which matters twice over on a dark tee. The weight keeps the shoulder line where it was cut, and dense cotton holds a dark dye far better than a thin one — the difference between a black that stays black and a black that turns grey by the second season. The cut is true oversized with a dropped shoulder and a crew neck.

Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. Dark trousers below and a sole with some weight: this is a print that wants a heavy silhouette under it, not a light one.
