An alive tee drawn in line, not in light and shadow
A woman's face rendered entirely in black line against the base, hair falling in drawn strands, ALIVE set above in wide capitals with a wireframe globe and sparkle marks around it. The alive tee is a line drawing, and that is a much harder discipline than it looks.
A portrait built from line has nowhere to hide. There is no shading to soften a wrong proportion and no gradient to blur a badly placed feature — every decision is visible, and the likeness either holds or it does not. The tradition runs from engraving through to tattoo flash, which is where this style most obviously comes from: single-weight outlines, hair drawn as separate strands rather than as mass, eyes carried by a few strokes.
The wireframe globe behind is what dates it. Grid-mapped spheres were the standard shorthand for technology and connectivity around the turn of the millennium, printed on everything from phone packaging to compilation covers. Placing a hand-drawn face over a machine-drawn sphere is the collision the whole design rests on.
It comes in black, slate and piggy pink. Black is the strongest, where the white line reads as light against the base. Slate softens the contrast toward something more restrained. Piggy pink warms an otherwise cold drawing in a way the original era would never have attempted.
Printed on 240 gsm cotton. Single-weight line is the least forgiving artwork on fabric: a line that thickens where the cloth stretches immediately looks like a printing fault rather than a drawing choice.
The fit is oversized from the pattern stage, with a dropped shoulder and a crew neck. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer cut. Low-rise trousers below and hoops at the ears if you are following the Y2K silhouette; wide trousers if you would rather let the oversized cut lead.
Wash cold and inside out, and keep softener off the printed area. On a design made of nothing but line, anything that softens an edge is working directly against the drawing.
