A black roses tee where the engraving does all the work

A cathedral rising behind a hooded figure, thorned roses closing in from both sides, and CATHEDRAL cut in blackletter across the foot with OF BLACK ROSES spaced underneath. The black roses tee is drawn in greys and silvers rather than colour, and that restraint is the entire design decision.

Monochrome is harder than it looks. Without colour to separate the planes, every element has to be held apart by line weight and shading alone — the roses in the foreground carry the heaviest linework, the figure sits in mid-tone, the architecture behind fades into fine hatching. It is the logic of an engraving rather than an illustration, and it is why the panel reads as depth instead of as a flat pile of gothic objects.

The roses are the tell. Black roses have never occurred in nature; every one that exists is a deep red or purple bred and photographed to look black. That gap between the thing and its reputation is the most gothic idea available, and it is the reason the motif has outlasted every other flower in the register.

It comes in white, black, americano, apricot, slate and piggy pink — the widest colour run in the collection. Black is the intended reading, where the silvers glow out of the base. White turns it into a print on paper. Americano and apricot warm the greys toward something older and softer, slate keeps it cold, and piggy pink sets up the contrast the Harajuku gothic side has always liked: sweet base, severe graphic.

The ground is 240 gsm cotton. Fine hatching is the first thing to disappear on a thin fabric that stretches. At this weight the linework stays where it was drawn. True oversized cut, dropped shoulder, crew neck. Take your usual size, or size down for a closer fit.
