A bubble tea hoodie where the pastels need a heavier ground

Pastel printing has a specific problem. Pale inks are the least opaque, so on a thin garment the base colour shows through and every soft tone shifts toward the shade of the fabric underneath. That is why so much cheap kawaii clothing looks washed out in person after looking fine in a photograph. A dense fleece takes more ink before it saturates, and the pale purples and creams here stay where the drawing put them.

The other gain is scale. Chibi proportions — oversized head, small body — depend on the head reading clearly, and a larger print area lets the face carry detail that a smaller panel would lose. The kanzashi in the hair, the pattern across the kimono sleeve and the seal at the foot all survive at this size in a way they only partly do on a tee.

It comes in white, black and rice apricot. White is the lightest reading and lets the artwork sit closest to print on paper. Black is the strongest contrast of the three and the one most designs here were composed for. Rice apricot is the warm middle ground — a soft, slightly greyed cream that takes the edge off a graphic without muting it.

Constructed from brushed fleece, 300 to 380 gsm, with a lined hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a kangaroo pocket. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. A pleated skirt below works, and so do layered socks.

Keep it out of the dryer. Heat is what shrinks fleece and flattens the brushed face, and once those raised fibres are matted down the garment loses both its warmth and the soft surface that made the pastels sit properly in the first place.
