Chrome Butterfly Tee

A chrome butterfly tee that hardens the softest Y2K motif

A butterfly with iridescent wings suspended inside a perspective grid, TRAPPED running vertically down the right edge in stretched type, small technical marks scattered across the panel. The chrome butterfly tee takes the single most reproduced motif of the era and gives it a much colder treatment.

The butterfly was everywhere between 1997 and 2003 — hair clips, low-rise jeans, phone charms, tattoos above the waistband. It carried an uncomplicated meaning back then: lightness, transformation, something pretty that had recently been something else. Rendering the same insect in chrome and suspending it inside a wireframe grid under the word TRAPPED reverses that entirely. Transformation becomes containment.

The tension is what makes the panel work. The wings hold genuine iridescence with pinks and greens shifting across each panel of the wing, drawn with the detail of a specimen plate. Everything around them is cold: grid lines, hard type, technical lettering. Soft subject, hard frame — the same construction principle the gothic side of the site uses, applied to a completely different register.

It comes in black, americano and slate. Black gives the wings the darkness they need to shimmer against, and is the strongest of the three. Americano warms the iridescence toward gold and copper. Slate is the coldest, and pushes the whole thing furthest toward the technical reading rather than the decorative one.

Made from 240 gsm cotton. Wing detail and grid lines are competing demands — one needs subtle colour transitions across a small area, the other needs hard straight edges running the full width of the panel — and only a stable surface delivers both at once. On lighter cotton you get one or the other, never both, which is why this kind of artwork is so often printed badly.

The cut is oversized from the pattern stage, with a dropped shoulder and a crew neck. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. Low-rise trousers below and a small bag: the Y2K silhouette narrows where the rest of this site widens, and this graphic was drawn for that proportion.
