A geisha hoodie where the flat colour survives the fold

That sounds like a problem and is actually the reason it works. Brushed fleece has a visible surface texture — raised fibres that catch light unevenly — and a design made of smooth gradients would look muddy on it. Hard-edged colour blocks do the opposite: they sit on top of the texture and stay legible, because the eye reads the boundary between two flat colours long before it reads the fibre underneath. Poster art and fleece are a better match than photography and fleece will ever be.

The sunburst helps too. Radiating lines have no fine detail to lose, and the rays run outward from the centre in every direction — meaning a fold across the shoulder crosses them at an angle rather than interrupting a straight edge. Designs built on strong diagonals are the ones that survive being worn rather than photographed flat.

It comes in white and black. White is the brightest and the most graphic, closest to how the artwork looks printed flat. Black is the deeper reading, where the lighter elements of the design appear to emerge from the base rather than sit on top of it. Two bases, two very different pieces.

The garment is brushed fleece, 300 to 380 gsm, with a lined hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a kangaroo pocket. Ribbing at the cuff and hem is doing structural work rather than decorative: it holds the sleeve and body in place while the rest of the garment hangs loose, which is what stops an oversized cut from turning shapeless after a few wears.

Take your usual size for the intended oversized drop, or size down for a closer fit. Wide trousers and a chunky sole underneath — a poster graphic wants a silhouette with presence under it, not a narrow one.
