Most large back prints demand to be seen whole. A composition built on one bright element behaves differently: cover half of it with an open jacket and the red still reads, because the eye finds the accent before it reads the composition around it. That is a practical property rather than an aesthetic one, and it is worth knowing when you are choosing which piece goes under a shell in winter.

The layout reinforces it. Technical lettering, a barcode, small caps at the foot — the visual furniture of a product label rather than of occult imagery. Fragments of that kind of layout still parse when partially obscured, in the way a barcode on a box is recognisable from a corner. The design was assembled from parts, so it survives being shown in parts.

It comes in black only, and that is a design decision rather than a limitation. This artwork depends on contrast against a dark ground: the lighter tones behave like light rather than like ink, and on any pale base the whole composition loses the depth it was drawn with.

Finished in brushed fleece, 300 to 380 gsm, with a lined hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a kangaroo pocket. A single accent colour only holds its edge on a stable surface: on a thin knit the red creeps into the grey around it and the hierarchy the whole design depends on quietly collapses.

The cut is oversized from the pattern stage. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. An open shell over the top and black trousers below — this is the piece in the gothic run built to be seen in fragments.
