Kabuki Tee

A kabuki tee for four hundred years of theatrical excess

An actor mid-pose against a red sun, robes flooding outward in turquoise, orange and gold, KABUKI set in a heavy display serif above and 歌舞伎 marked below. The kabuki tee goes for the loudest moment in Japanese theatre and prints it at the scale it deserves.

Kabuki has been running since the early 1600s, and it has never been the restrained one. The make-up is exaggerated on purpose, the costumes are built to be read from the cheap seats, and the most famous convention in the form is the mie — the actor freezes mid-scene, crosses his eyes, and holds the pose while the audience shouts. It is theatre designed to be seen from far away by people who are not being quiet about it, which makes it the natural ancestor of a back-panel print.

The drawing keeps that energy. Colour runs hot across the whole panel, the robe pattern breaks into small repeated motifs when you get close, and the face carries the white base and red kumadori lines of the real thing. Three lines of small type at the foot give it the feel of a playbill rather than a costume study, and the red disc behind the figure holds the composition together.

It comes in white, black, apricot, slate and piggy pink. White is the playbill reading and the brightest of the five. Black drops the background out entirely and leaves the costume glowing. Apricot warms the golds, slate cools the turquoise toward something you could wear under a jacket, and piggy pink pushes the whole thing into a register kabuki would probably have approved of.

Underneath it all, heavyweight cotton at 240 gsm. A print with this much colour needs a stable surface — on thin cotton the tones shift every time the fabric folds. True oversized cut, dropped shoulder, crew neck. Take your usual size, or size down for a closer fit.
