Koi go dormant in winter. When the water drops below about ten degrees they stop feeding, sink to the bottom of the pond and stay almost motionless until spring — which is why Japanese garden ponds are built deep enough not to freeze through. The fish that symbolises relentless upstream effort spends a third of the year doing nothing at all. There is a better lesson in that than in the waterfall legend, and it arrives exactly when you start wearing a hoodie.

On a heavier garment the print also behaves differently. Fleece absorbs more ink than jersey and holds colour deeper, so the reds sit richer and less bright than they do on a tee. Fine linework loses a fraction of its sharpness in exchange. For an image built on bold shapes and strong contrast, that trade is worth taking — it is the reason this design was chosen for the heavier piece rather than a more delicate one.

It comes in black only, and that is a design decision rather than a limitation. This artwork depends on contrast against a dark ground: the lighter tones behave like light rather than like ink, and on any pale base the whole composition loses the depth it was drawn with.

Construction is brushed fleece at 300 to 380 gsm, with a lined hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a kangaroo pocket. The brushed face is what makes a fleece feel warm rather than merely thick: the fibres are raised mechanically after weaving to trap air against the skin, which is why two garments at the same weight can behave completely differently.

Take your usual size for the intended oversized drop, or size down if you want it closer to the body. Narrow trousers below and a heavy sole — a hood adds visual mass at the shoulders, and the proportion only works if the bottom half stays lean.
