Koi Fish Tee

A koi fish tee built on the oldest patience story in Japan

A single koi rising through a stack of 日本 kanji, TOKYO cut in heavy display type across the top, and a line of small text closing the panel at the bottom. The koi fish tee uses the fish the way Japan has always used it: not as decoration, but as an argument about persistence.

The story behind the motif is worth knowing. Koi are the carp that swim upstream against the current, and in the legend the one that reaches the top of the waterfall becomes a dragon. That is why you find them tattooed on backs, painted on banners and, for the last thirty years, printed across streetwear. The fish is not calm. It is the animal that refuses to be carried.

The print is drawn in reds and off-whites against the base, with enough line detail in the scales and fins to hold up close and enough contrast to read from a distance. Type does the rest of the work: TOKYO in block capitals, the kanji column running down the centre, small technical lettering at the foot of the panel. It sits in the graphic tradition of the back streets rather than the souvenir shop.

It comes in black, americano and slate — the three quietest bases in the range, chosen because a print this red needs a ground that does not compete with it. Black gives the sharpest contrast, americano warms the whole thing toward a vintage register, slate keeps it muted enough to wear under a jacket without shouting.

Woven at 240 gsm in heavyweight cotton, cut true oversized with a dropped shoulder and a crew neck. Take your usual size for the intended relaxed drop, or size down if you want it closer to the body. Wear it with something narrower below and a heavy sole.
