Onigawara — demon roof tiles — sit at the ridge ends of temple roofs across Japan, facing outward, watching the approach. They are not decoration; they are stationed. The same logic puts guardian figures at gate posts and demon faces above doorways: the frightening thing occupies the boundary between inside and outside. A hood is the closest a garment comes to that position, and printing the guardian on the panel directly below it is not an accident of layout.

Practically, a dark fleece is also the right home for this artwork. Saturated blues and reds need a deep base to sit against, and brushed fleece holds dark dye better than jersey does — it stays black through more washes because there is simply more fibre holding the pigment. For a print built on hot colour against darkness, that longevity is the whole game.

It comes in black only, and that is a design decision rather than a limitation. This artwork depends on contrast against a dark ground: the lighter tones behave like light rather than like ink, and on any pale base the whole composition loses the depth it was drawn with.

Made from brushed fleece, 300 to 380 gsm, with a lined hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a kangaroo pocket. Care is worth a line here: cold wash inside out, no dryer, no softener on the printed area. Softener coats the fibres and takes the density out of exactly the part of the garment you bought it for.

The cut is oversized from the pattern stage. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. Dark trousers below and a sole with some weight to it.
