Onigiri Cap

An onigiri cap carrying the most everyday food in Japan
A single rice ball with its band of nori, embroidered onto the front panel of a soft six-panel cap. The onigiri cap takes the least glamorous item in Japanese food culture and treats it as worth stitching.
Onigiri is not restaurant food. It is what a parent packs for a school trip, what you buy at a convenience store at seven in the morning, what gets eaten on a train with one hand. The triangle shape exists because it packs efficiently and holds together; the nori band is wrapped separately in shop-bought versions so the seaweed stays crisp until you open it. There is an entire small engineering culture around a rice ball, and none of it is decorative.
Stitching it at chest-badge scale suits that modesty. The design is simple enough to read instantly from across a room — white triangle, dark band, a fleck of filling — and embroidery gives the rice a texture that print would flatten into a single tone. Simple subjects are where thread outperforms ink most clearly.
It comes in black, stone, pink, light blue and white. Black gives the strongest contrast against the white rice. Stone is the closest to the colour of the food itself. Pink and light blue are the softer readings, and white makes the nori band the only dark element on the whole cap, which is the most graphic version of the five.
Unstructured crown, pre-curved brim, adjustable strap, one size. Unstructured means there is no stiffening panel behind the front: the cap sits low and follows the head rather than standing away from it, which is the shape that works under a hood and inside a shell.
Hand wash only. The brim holds its curve through years of wear but not through one spin cycle, and a stitched badge on a warped brim is the fastest way to make a good cap look cheap.
