Stay Punk Tee

A stay punk tee that draws the shout rather than the pose

A figure caught mid-scream, mouth wide, hair thrown forward, stay PUNK stacked above and stay DRUNK below in the same rough magenta lettering. The stay punk tee is the only print in the collection that captures a person in motion rather than in a pose.

That difference is the whole design. Punk photography from the late seventies is almost entirely mid-action — Pennie Smith's shots for The Clash are famously out of focus, and the band chose one for a record sleeve precisely because the blur carried the energy that a sharp frame would have killed. The drawing here works the same way: the hair is drawn as movement, the mouth is open rather than set, the hands are caught halfway through a gesture.

The palette is stripped to two values plus one. Everything is black and off-white except the type and a few marks, which run hot magenta. That restraint keeps the eye on the figure, and it is why the panel still reads at a distance despite having a lot of small linework inside it. The lettering is deliberately uneven, as if cut by hand.

It comes in white, black, apricot, slate and piggy pink. White is the closest to a printed poster and the most legible. Black turns the magenta into neon and gives the figure the most contrast. Apricot and slate soften the shout for anyone who wants it quieter, and piggy pink is the one that makes the joke properly — a scream printed on the sweetest base available.

Made from 240 gsm cotton. Hand-cut lettering has irregular edges by design, which means a fabric that blurs those edges destroys the intent entirely — it stops looking cut and starts looking badly printed.
