Small embroidery has a floor. Below a certain size, thread cannot hold detail and a complicated design turns to mush — which is why so many badges are over-simplified out of necessity rather than choice. Here the simplicity is deliberate: two shapes, two colours, one horizontal division. On a bucket hat's larger flat panel there would be room for far more, and choosing not to fill it is the design decision.
Nigiri earns that treatment. It appeared in Edo in the 1820s as stall food, and everything that could be removed was — no rolling, no wrapping, just fish pressed onto rice. It has survived two centuries with almost no change because there is nothing left to take away. A badge that mirrors that logic says something about the dish that a busier drawing could not.
It comes in black, grey, khaki and white. Black makes the salmon glow and is the sharpest of the four. Grey keeps it muted and lets the orange do all the work. Khaki warms the whole thing considerably, and white is the cleanest and the closest to a plate.
Woven cotton, unstructured crown, stitched down-turned brim, one size. The downward angle is functional before it is stylistic: it keeps sun off the face at a low angle and rain off the collar, which is what the shape was originally built to do.
Hand wash cool, air dry, and reshape the brim by hand while damp. A machine cycle is what permanently deforms a stitched brim, and no amount of pressing brings the angle back.
