Torii Beanie

A torii beanie where straight lines meet a stretching fabric

A vermilion torii gate — two uprights, two crossbeams — embroidered on the cuff of a ribbed knit beanie. The torii beanie is the most geometric badge in the collection sitting on the least geometric surface, and that tension is worth understanding.

A knit stretches. That is its entire function, and it is why one size fits a range of heads. But a design built from four straight beams has no tolerance for distortion — bend one upright and the whole structure looks wrong, because the eye knows what a gate should look like. The badge is placed on the doubled cuff for exactly this reason: it is the one part of the hat that does not stretch when the crown does.

The subject rewards that precision. A torii marks a threshold — sacred ground beyond, ordinary ground behind — and it never has doors or walls because enclosure was never the point. Its symmetry is functional rather than decorative, which means a slightly crooked version stops reading as a gate at all.

It comes in black, dark grey, heather grey, baby pink and white. Black makes the vermilion glow hardest. Dark grey and heather grey keep it architectural and quiet. White is the cleanest and closest to a gate seen against a pale sky. Baby pink is the softest reading, and the most Harajuku of the five.

Ribbed knit, double-layer turn-up cuff, one size, stretch fit. The rib is what allows a single size to work at all: alternating raised and recessed columns let the fabric open across the head and pull back afterwards, which a flat knit cannot do without deforming.

Hand wash cool and dry flat, and reshape while damp if the cuff has twisted. Never hang a wet knit — its own weight is enough to stretch it permanently out of shape.
