Torii Bucket Hat

A torii is pure geometry: perfect symmetry, four straight elements, no forgiving curves anywhere. Put that on something that stretches or curves and any distortion is immediately visible, because the eye knows exactly what the shape should be. A bucket hat crown is a straight-sided woven panel with no give and no seam through the middle, which means the gate stays square from every angle and through every wash.

The subject rewards the precision in another way. A torii marks a threshold — sacred ground on one side, ordinary ground on the other — and its symmetry is functional rather than decorative. It has no doors and encloses nothing, because passing through is the entire purpose. A crooked one would stop reading as a gate and start reading as a mistake.

It comes in black, grey, khaki and white. Black makes the vermilion glow hardest and is the strongest of the four. Grey keeps it architectural and quiet. Khaki warms it toward weathered wood, which is closer to how most gates actually look up close. White is the cleanest and reads like a gate against pale sky.

Unstructured woven cotton, stitched brim, one size. The rows of topstitching around the brim are what hold its angle: they bind the layers together and give the edge enough body to stay turned down, where a single unstitched hem softens within a season and starts to flap.

Hand wash in cool water, air dry, and reshape the brim by hand while damp. Heat shrinks cotton unevenly, and a shrunken crown sits too high on the head to look right.
