True Punk Tee

A true punk tee where one red bar does everything

A figure pulling open a jacket, bleached hair, mouth open, a red bar laid across the eyes and TRUE PUNK marked at the foot. The true punk tee is drawn almost entirely in greyscale, and the single red element is what turns it from a portrait into a statement.

The censor bar is one of the most efficient devices in graphic design. Cover a subject's eyes and two things happen at once: the person becomes anonymous, and the image starts to look like evidence — a police file, a redacted document, a photograph someone did not want published. Punk publications used it constantly, sometimes to protect people and just as often to imply there was something to protect them from.

Everything else in the panel is built to let that bar work. The greyscale is high-contrast and slightly blown out, like a photocopy of a photograph. The lettering is hand-drawn and imperfect. There is no second accent colour anywhere, because a second one would split the eye and the bar would stop reading as an intervention on top of the image.

It comes in white, black, apricot, slate and piggy pink. White is the document reading, closest to a printed page. Black makes the red glow and the greys separate hardest. Apricot warms the whole thing toward old newsprint. Slate is the most restrained, and piggy pink is the sharpest contradiction of the five.

Body is 240 gsm cotton. A blown-out greyscale portrait depends on holding several near-white tones apart from each other; on thin fabric those tones merge and the face flattens into a single pale shape with no structure left in it. Density keeps them distinct, which is the whole reason this style of image survives on a garment at all.

The cut is oversized from the pattern stage, with a dropped shoulder and a crew neck. Take your usual size for the intended drop, or size down for a closer fit. Black denim below and a boot with some weight: this is a graphic that wants a hard silhouette rather than a soft one.
