Yōkai Beanie

A yōkai beanie carrying a face at the smallest workable size

A horned blue demon mask with gold eyes and bared teeth, embroidered on the cuff of a ribbed knit beanie. The yōkai beanie is the most demanding badge in the headwear run, because faces have a minimum size below which they stop working.

The eye reads faces differently from other objects. It expects specific proportions and detects an error instantly — which means a face badge either has enough separation between its elements to stay readable, or it collapses into a coloured blob. This one survives at cuff scale because nothing in it is subtle: a solid blue field, gold eyes with hard boundaries, white teeth, a red mouth. Any shading or tonal transition would disappear entirely at this size.

The subject can afford that bluntness. Festival and noh masks were carved to be read at distance under poor light, with exaggerated features and strong colour separation for exactly the same reason. A design already built for legibility at range translates cleanly to a badge a few centimetres across.

It comes in black, dark grey, heather grey, baby pink and white. Black is where the blue and gold read hardest and the version most people will reach for. Dark grey and heather grey soften the contrast without losing the face. White turns the badge into a coloured object on a blank field, and baby pink is the deliberate contradiction — a demon on the sweetest base available.

Double-layer cuff, stretch rib knit, one size. The doubled cuff does three things at once: it holds the embroidery dimensionally stable, it doubles the insulation exactly where the hat covers the ears, and it gives the brim enough body to stay turned up rather than unrolling through the day.

Hand wash cool, dry flat, never a dryer. Heat destroys the elastic recovery that makes a one-size knit fit, and once it is gone the hat is simply loose.
