Yōkai Bucket Hat

Faces need separation to work. Horns, eyes, brow, teeth and mouth all have to stay distinct or the whole thing collapses into a coloured shape — which is why the same design has to be simplified on a cap panel and simplified again on a beanie cuff. A flat woven crown with no stretch and no seam lets each element keep its own space, so the mask reads as a face rather than as an impression of one.

Placement matters here more than usual. A bucket hat sits low, and the brim shades the badge for most of the day — which is exactly right for this subject. Demon faces on temple roof tiles and gateposts are positioned to look outward from under an overhang, watching the approach. The hat reproduces that geometry without meaning to.

It comes in black, grey, khaki and white. Black is where the blue and gold read hardest and the version most people reach for. Grey softens the contrast. Khaki pulls the whole thing toward a utilitarian register that suits the mask's protective function. White turns the badge into a coloured object on a blank field, and is the sharpest of the four in bright light.
