A horned blue demon mask with gold eyes and bared teeth, embroidered on the front panel of a low-profile cap. The yōkai cap carries the most detailed badge in the headwear run, and it needs the stitch count to work.

Yōkai is a wide category — it covers everything from mischievous household spirits to genuinely dangerous creatures — and the blue-faced, horned figure sits at the frightening end. Masks like this appear in noh theatre and at festivals, and the logic behind wearing one has never been about scaring people. A frightening face turned outward is protective: it faces what is coming so you do not have to. The same reasoning puts demon tiles on temple roofs.

Detail is the technical challenge. Small embroidery loses definition fast, and a face needs several elements — horns, eyes, teeth, brow — to remain readable at a few centimetres. It works here because the colour blocks are large and separated: blue field, gold eyes, white teeth, red mouth. Subtle shading would disappear at this size, so nothing is subtle.

It comes in black, stone, pink, light blue and white. Black is where the blue and gold read hardest, and the version most people will choose. Stone and white let the badge sit as a coloured object against a neutral field. Light blue is tonal, closest to the mask itself. Pink is the deliberate contradiction — a demon on the sweetest base available.

Six panels, unstructured crown, pre-curved brim, adjustable strap, one size. The adjustable strap is why a single size works: it sets the fit at the back rather than stretching the crown, which keeps the front panel flat and the embroidery undistorted.

Hand wash only, and never a dryer. Heat shrinks a crown unevenly, and on a badge with this much detail even a small distortion is visible in the face.
